Spring Clean Your Life
Spring is a transformative season and it is important to recognise the changes that occur and the effects they can have on you. The good news is that often spring improves your mood as days become longer and the sun is out more frequently. However, the unsettled climate of spring which is constantly shifting from cold wintering mornings to days full of sunshine can actually have a negative impact on your health. During spring many people claim to suffer more from headaches, joint pains and colds through this transitioning phase. The rise of pollen in the air being a particular issue for hayfever sufferers. As well as this some people actually suffer from ‘seasonal affective disorder’ which is a depression brought on by a change in seasons. Someone dealing with this is likely to struggle with low moods, trouble sleeping, low energy and lack of motivation, to list a few. The change in climate also impacts on your skin, so it’s crucial to recognise that a change in how you care for your skin may be needed alongside the change in weather.
Looking after your wellbeing should always be a priority so with this is mind here are some tips on how to manage the change in seasons to keep your mind, body and soul happy!
Body
The most noticeable change you will see with your body is your skin. You are less likely to suffer from very dry skin since the temperature is warmer and the impact of the harsh effects of central heating drying your skin will be minimised. Therefore as your skin adapts to the change in environment you might also consider changing your skin routine, using a lighter moisturiser (for instance if using our range, switching from Youth Elixir to the lighter Beauty Tonic organic face oil) or simply reducing the quantity you use as your skin will need less.
Giving your house a ‘spring clean’ will reduce the amount of bacteria that comes into contact with your skin whilst at home, making sure to change your bed linen frequently, particularly your pillowcases to give your skin a good chance of staying clear.
Getting active again after a long winter will not only make you fitter but also boost your mood as it stimulates certain chemicals in your brain which leave you feeling happier afterwards. Exercise is the best way to give your body a good spring clean and help it to rejuvenate for the coming months, since it strengthens muscles, which improves your endurance, leaving you feeling more energised as well as helping you sleep. This gives your body time to rejuvenate and de-stress resulting in a more motivated, positive version of yourself!
Embrace the new in season vegetables, including them into your diet and placing an emphasis on getting your 10 portions of fruit and veg a day whilst limiting dairy, sugar, salt and processed meats to give your body the nutrients it needs to get through this next season.
Soul
Spring is a good time for your soul, as it's a time for ‘out with the old and in with the new’. People take the opportunity to clear out and sort all the mess that has gathered up over the winter months. Clearing out and organising yourself is very therapeutic for your soul, making you feel calm and focused, prepared to deal with the upcoming months leading up to summer. A great resource to help in this process is Jean Haner's book Clear Home, Clear Heart. Taking the time to do this spring clean will give you a chance to realign your focus onto yourself, leaving time to focus on what makes you happy and in return this will feed your soul with positive energy.
Mind
More sunlight hours and less grey days can enhance your memory and creativity. Researchers from the University of Michigan found that spending as little as 30 minutes longer outside in good weather will boost your productivity. Feeding your mind with fresh air is a great way to keep up productivity and improve your general wellbeing.
Trying out a new sport or a new hobby can help your mind to relax, and with this joining a new community of like minded people will give you the chance to build relationships and socialise which is very important for your wellbeing.
Spring is a great time of the year to get organised, adjust your lifestyle and make positive changes that will enhance all aspects of your body. Giving your mind, body and spirit that ‘Spring clean’ really will leave you feeling refreshed as you head into the summer with a renewed zest for life.
Skinfully yours,
