Ingredient in the Spotlight: Tea Tree Oil
Nature has blessed us with some amazing organic ingredients that are great for our skin; tea tree oil is one of them. Found in Australia, this essential oil has been used for over 3,000 years to treat various skin and hair problems.
Also known as Melaleuca, tea tree oil is popular for its antiseptic properties and its ability to treat skin. Here at Miss Organics we love a natural remedy and tea tree oil is one of the best out there for treating breakouts (we even use it in one of our face oils)! However, tea tree does more than treat your skin so let’s take a look into some of its other benefits too!
1. Tea Tree Oil for Acne
Let’s start off with the best! One of the most common uses of tea tree oil today is in skin care products. Its antiseptic properties help treat blemishes and its antibacterial properties control the formation of new ones. In fact, many people (and doctors) often use tea tree oil instead of prescribed medications as it's just as effective and comes without the nasty side effects.
We also love tea tree, and as mentioned before use it in our Perfect Balance face oil! This lightweight organic face oil is bursting with nutrients that work together with your skin to regulate sebum production, purify and achieve a clearer complexion.
2. Tea Tree Oil for Hair
When it comes to looking after your hair most of us go for the nice sweet strawberry smelling shampoo, however although tea tree doesn’t smell quite as good as strawberries, it has been proven to be very beneficial for treating hair and scalp. Tea tree has the ability to soothe dry, flaky skin, remove dandruff and even remove lice. Due to its antiseptic properties it is like coconut oil and can be used in combination with this or on its own.
3. Tea Tree Oil for Eczema
Tea tree oil can be used to treat any type of inflammation, including being used as a natural eczema treatment and for treating psoriasis. You can even mix it with coconut oil and lavender oil to make a homemade body lotion. It is best to get the advice of a qualified aromatherapist however before applying tea tree oil as essential oils are very concentrated and need to be handled with care.
4. Tea Tree oil for Deodorant
Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that destroy the bacteria on your skin that cause body odour. You can make homemade tea tree oil deodorant by mixing it with coconut oil and baking soda. You can even mix tea tree with lemon and it will keep your shoes smelling fresh!
5. Tea Tree oil for Cleaning
Yes, tea tree oil is not just limited to your skin! It can also be a great household cleaner. Due to its high antimicrobial properties, it can kill off bad bacteria in your home. It can also kill off mould around your home in places like the bathroom and kitchen. If you mix tea tree oil with water, vinegar and lemon oil it creates a great homemade (and cheaper) household cleanser.
6. Tea Tree oil for Healing
Our final benefit of tea tree oil is that it is great at treating burns and healing cuts! If you have a minor burn and your skin is feeling irritated then applying tea tree oil will help soothe it. Likewise, with a cut such as a razor cut, if you apply gently with a cotton wool ball it will calm the skin down and heal much faster.
These are only a few of the benefits that tea tree oil possesses! However hopefully this has given you an insight into what this amazing natural oil can do, and its variations both on your skin and at home!
